Trailer driving E behind B?
In practice it’s often that drivers of a combination of a passenger car with trailer not have the proper license. For example, anyone with a heavy caravan, a horse trailer or a boat trailer will need to have a valid Dutch driving license BE. We have put different demands and responsibilities in a row and through the flow chart below it is easy to determine whether BE or B license is required.
With the car driving license may be draw a trailer up to 750 kg (including payload).
In the following case you may pull a trailer with more than 750 kilos. Namely if the trailer is, including payload weighs, no more than the unlading mass of the towing vehicle. The maximum mass of the combined total must not exceed 3500 kilo’s. Failure to meet this requirement it is required to obtain the trailer license.
For the trailer license is the weight of the trailer not important.
That is only bound to the maximum towing load that stands on the certificate. The total weight of the combination is not important. These can be more than 3500 kilo’s. For the towing vehicle is a maximum weight of 3500 kilo’s. Those who have got their license B before 1984, have automatically their BE license.
Examples:
- Unlading vehicle weight: 2800 kilo’s.
- Maximum permissible trailer weight: 740 kilo’s.
- Required: B license
- Reason: maximum trailer weight is less than 750 kilo’s
- Unladen vehicle weight: 1600 kilo’s.
- Maximum permissible trailer weight: 2000 kilo’s.
- Required: BE license.
- Reason: maximum trailer weight is more than the unlading mass of the vehicle and the overall combination is heavier than 3500 kilo’s.
Below is a description of the special operations.
Operation 1, 2 and 6 are always performed during the exam. In addition the examiner chooses 2 other transactions that during the examination should be carried out.
1. Preparation and control operations
The administrative control of the vehicle records and control of the combination.
2. Entry and exit
The driver is to ensure that the entry and exit will be as soon as possible and takes no nuisance or could endanger other road users. 4b. through a reverse curve
3. Slope test
Stop the vehicle without errors on a hillside and drive off again whether or not using the parking drag. The intention is that this car does not roll away and the engine stalls. Because of the weight of the trailer the resistance to drive away is greater.
4. Reverse
a. in a straight line reversing and stopping while the rear of the vehicle combination is located adjacent to a previously specified location.
The combination is going to be drive straight back with minimal steering.
b. The reverse driving through a curve in a (imaginary) driveway or garage, or (imaginary) loading berth.
To steer the combination in one smooth motion in the curve and stop when submitting the combination in the middle and right in the garage or driveway.
5. Turning
a. To turn by using a side street
Through a turn left or right back in the street riding. 4a: a straight line in reverse
b. To turn by a half-turn
In a reverse time using parking lots or strips.
6. Coupling and uncoupling
The on-/of coupling should be done in a place where it can be safely performed.
